Use FreeSyntax notch on open-source repositories: inspect code, make a focused change, review the diff and run checks with local AI.

02

Where notch fits

FreeSyntax notch helps with repository work using local AI and optional cloud providers. Use the Windows desktop preview for an editor and terminal together, or the CLI for a terminal workflow. The aim is a reviewable change in your own project, rather than a hosted SaaS workspace.

03

Start with the repository’s rules

Read the project README, contribution guide and license before editing. Install its documented dependencies and run the existing checks to establish a baseline. Work on a branch and keep credentials outside prompts and tracked files. Model output needs the same review as other code contributions.

04

Make the first task narrow

Ask notch to locate the relevant implementation and explain the expected behavior. Give it a concrete bug or a small test failure. Review proposed edits before accepting them, then run the project’s normal tests and inspect the diff. A passing test covers that test’s assertions; it does not establish that generated code is secure or correct in every case.

05

Choose local or cloud execution deliberately

Local inference uses your machine and configured model runner. It can reduce reliance on a remote inference service, but network tools, package installation and integrations may still send traffic outside your machine. Optional cloud models have their own credentials, costs and data policies. Do not describe a workflow as fully offline unless all of its steps are offline.

06

Share a reproducible contribution

When reporting a model-assisted result, include the issue, test command and relevant environment details. Document model and runner settings when they affect reproduction. Follow the repository’s disclosure and authorship policies. Do not claim benchmarks, independence from external services or license permissions that you have not verified.
